The original Hawaiian name for Spouting Horn was “puhi,” meaning blowhole, and the water being forced upwards by strong ocean currents through this small opening within the lava rock can reach up to 50 feet in height. However, when waters are calm, the spout may not be as impressive as some larger ones found in Maui. However, what makes Spouting Horn entirely unique is the hissing/groaning sound it emits during a spurt. This spawned the legend that a lizard got trapped in the hole while attempting to catch a wily fish, and the unfortunate reptile hisses whenever a rush of water blows through his watery prison. This unusual natural wonder is definitely worth a stop if you’re hiking along the Koloa Heritage Trail.
