Chester–Hadlyme Ferry

Service began in 1769, but back then it was called Warner's Ferry. Jonathan Warner, who owned property on both sides of the river, operated the ferry from Parish of Chester to Lyme. It was also used for the Revolutionary War effort. This is the second oldest continuously operating ferry in Connecticut. Originally, the ferry was operated by the use of long poles, but technology advanced, allowing for steam power to the modern day diesel-run craft. Tourist attractions along the ferry route include Gillette's Castle and Essex Steam Train. (Submitted by Shirley Beauchemin Thurston)
