Lahaina Jodo Mission
This Jodo Buddhist mission was founded in 1912 for the many Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaii to work in the pineapple and sugar fields. Sadly, the original temple succumbed to a fire in 1968. What you see today is the rebuilt temple, plus two stunning additions (built in 1968)—the Temple Bell and The Great Buddha—in commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the arrival of the very first Japanese immigrants to the Hawaiian Islands. These tranquil and beautifully landscaped grounds are perfect for anyone seeking a restful moment of calm, to admire the mission’s traditional Japanese architecture, and to take in the gorgeous views of the ocean and the West Maui mountains.
