Mission Houses Historic Site

Get a fascinating glimpse into 19th Century Hawaiian Missionary life by stepping into three fully restored, original mission houses—two of which (the Oldest Frame House and the Chamberlain House) are the oldest houses of their kind in Hawaii. The museum also features artifacts and documents from 1820 – 1863, Hawaii’s “missionary” period, including original letters, diaries, drawings, church records and more. Particularly interesting is the way in which the design of the mission houses continually evolved to better suit the Hawaiian climate and lifestyle. Funnily enough, the oldest mission house, built in the New England style, had roofs designed to bear the weight of snow.
