Mohandas Gandhi Statue

This lifelike bronze statue of iconic spiritual leader and peace activist Mohandas K. Gandhi stands under the shade of a banyan tree near the Honolulu Zoo. It was gifted to the City of Honolulu in 1990, but the donating organization—the so-called Gandhi Memorial International Foundation—became entangled in controversy after giving out sham peace “awards” as bribes and for misuse of monetary contributions. Fortunately the bogus foundation closed in 1999, but the lovely statue still remains, and its image has been appropriated by the Ghandi International Institute for Peace headquartered in Honolulu.
