Description:

A walled fishpond called a kuapa filled with brackish water is centuries-old. The 13-mile wall is the longest for a fishpond in Hawaii. Restoration efforts began in 1990, mostly carried out by dedicated college students. Many Hawaiian fishponds are in need of repair but Paepae o He'eia is thriving under the care of the many volunteers who are returning it to productivity.
