Turtle Bay Pillbox

This machine gun pillbox is one of the remnants of the KAAB defense infrastructures from the 1940s. An earthquake and a tsunami destroyed the remaining shoreline structures in 1946. Located by the ocean the pillbox is a guard post dug into the ground. It is made of concrete and equipped with loopholes through which to fire weapons. The structure mimics old medical pillboxes, hence its name. There's a nice hike from the fruit stand leading you past a beautiful local beach and horse trail to the Turtle Bay pillbox. There are also some fantastic views of the Pacific. Just make sure you have sound footing if you want to go out on the lava rocks because it's pretty jagged. The combination of the beach and the shaded walk and lots of turtles swimming around make this a nice leisurely walk worth a visit.
