Nikolaevsk was founded in 1965 by settlers from Oregon. Called the Old Believers, these settlers built their Russian Orthodox church in the traditional style with an onion dome topping the structure. Old Believers practicing Russian Orthodox beliefs hold to the old ways of their religion. They were persecuted in Russia in the 19th century. The church is conveniently located off of Alaska Route 1, roughly 4 hours driving distance from Anchorage. It is open on Saturday from 6 PM to 10 PM for evening services and Sunday from 8 AM to 11 AM for morning services. They encourage visitors!
