Description:
Settled by gold miners, Chicken, AK was named for a completely different bird - the ptarmigan - which was plentiful in the area. Because the settlers could not agree on the spelling for this gamebird they decided to name the new town Chicken. To honor the strange but catchy name the town, population 13, has giant scrap metal chickens erected in different areas. Each is slightly different - this one has very clearly defined feathers and crest which must have been quite laborious. To get there take Airport Road south from Taylor Highway. Once on Airport Road make your first left into the RV park and follow the road until you see Pedro Dredge. The chicken will be northeast of Pedro Dredge.
