The tranquil setting against the backdrop of snowcapped mountains is the perfect place for a lighthouse and for visitors. First lit in 1923, this lighthouse still actively guides water vessels safely through the water. Most people observe the lighthouse from the deck of a cruise ship but the island is home to a small population of Tlingit people. It is also home to bears whose population outnumbers humans on the island 2:1.
