Description:

St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Cathedral in Sitka, Alaska, is one of the most iconic landmarks from Alaska’s Russian era and was originally built between 1844 and 1848 as the first Russian Orthodox cathedral in North America. Designed by Bishop Innocent Veniaminov, the cathedral served as the spiritual center of Russian America and remains an enduring symbol of Russian cultural influence in Alaska. After the original structure was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1966, it was meticulously rebuilt using the original plans and today stands as a National Historic Landmark filled with treasured icons, artifacts, and centuries of history.
