Description:
Built in 1912 by Canadian entrepreneur John M. McPherson, the Hotel Magma began as one of Superior’s first reinforced concrete commercial buildings, a forward-looking design amid a town of predominantly wooden structures. In 1916 and again in 1923, the hotel was expanded with an adobe addition (later collapsing in 2007) and a stylish Mission Revival style brick wing by architect John Davey, earning it placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. After decades of disuse and deterioration, visionary restoration by Los Cedros Superior, LLC, led by Miguel A. Sfeir, revived the property and reopened it as a boutique hotel with 21 rooms and period details in 2019.
