Description:

Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas preserves the history of two frontier forts established in 1817 and 1838, which played key roles in westward expansion and law enforcement. It was also the seat of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas, where Judge Isaac C. Parker, known as the “Hanging Judge,” presided over cases in the late 19th century. Today, the site tells the story of frontier life, Native American removal, and justice on the border of Indian Territory.
