Mauney House and Mine

Built in the 1830s this two-story wooden house is named after the original owner. The story is that a neighbor discovered diamonds in the soil. Thus, Mauney and his family set the land up as a tourist attraction where people could come and dig up the land mining for their own diamonds for 50 cents a person. One lucky customer found an 8.1 carat diamond! Great idea, but the lack of paved roads at that time prevented Mauney's business from becoming long term. Take Hwy 301 south of Murfreesboro and you can't miss it on the way into Crater of Diamonds State Park.
