Description:
This memorial to the 20th-century writer John Steinbeck at Cannery Row in Monterey is a life-sized bust depicting Steinbeck as a middle-aged man sporting a blazer. John Steinbeck had written the novel about the Cannery Row sardine factories. Steinbeck also grew up in Salinas and lived in Monterey in the 1920s and early 1930s. His novel "Cannery Row," published in 1944, coincided with the sardine population peak. Steinbeck wrote several books about this area as his works are set in southern and central California, particularly in the Salinas Valley and the California coast.
