Description:

California's first Constitution was drafted in October 1849 in Colton Hall to serve as a public school and town meeting hall. Colton Hall offers visitors a re-creation of that same meeting room and exhibits on early Monterey. The first floor is still in use for the offices of the Planning and Building departments. In contrast, the second floor is the location of the California history museum in the enormous assembly hall. The museum was established in 1949 and is open for free daily.
