Description:

Strange, mystical columns were buried deep until the manmade reservoir of Crowley Lake uncovered these unearthly structures. In short, a prehistoric volcanic event formed the columns with erosion-resistant minerals. The lake was created in 1941 and wore away the softer materials, revealing the glorious temple-like design. The columns are not easy to get to but they are well worth the trip. They are only visible when the water level of the lake is lower. To get to the nearest parking lot you must have a 4WD vehicle. Otherwise, you'll need to park at the trailhead for Crowley Lake and then hike a four-mile round trip.
