Description:

The Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area in California City, CA, is a 39-square-mile protected Mojave Desert habitat dedicated to conserving the native desert tortoise and other desert wildlife, with an interpretive center and self-guided trails for visitors to explore. Spring through early summer (mid-March to mid-June) and the cooler morning and evening hours are the best times to spot tortoises as they emerge from burrows to forage before the heat of the day drives them underground. The area is generally open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with seasonal naturalists on site during the spring to help visitors learn more about the tortoises and the desert ecosystem.
