This is the fourth cross to stand in this place, constructed in 1941. The first one was erected by the Father himself when he founded this missionary in 1782. Wear and tear, bad weather, and ocean climates eroded the original cross and the following two. Father Junipero Serra amazingly founded nine missionaries in California; this one was his last.
