Description:

In 1873, Eliza Tibbets planted the Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree in Riverside, California, using cuttings imported from Bahia, Brazil, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This tree became the foundation of California's navel orange industry, as its seedless, flavorful fruit thrived in the state's climate. Today, the original tree still stands at the intersection of Magnolia and Arlington Streets in Riverside, recognized as California Historic Landmark No. 20. To protect it from citrus greening disease, a protective screen was installed over the tree in 2019.
