Amateur miners love spending hours sifting through rocks to find little crystalline semi-precious nuggets in a variety of shimmering colors. Its history started in the mid 1800s when Gold Rush miners sought their fortunes in the San Luis Rey River. What they found may not have been as costly, but rivaled gold in beauty. This area is known for producing the some of the most vivid pink tourmaline in the world. Since the 19th century these beautiful rose-colored crystals have been exported around the world and were used to adorn Queen Victoria, Dowager Empress Cixi of China, and the Romanov family.
