Getty Villa

Oil tycoon J.P. Getty needed a place to display his growing collection of artwork. The result is this gorgeous gallery, built in 1954 and modeled after an opulent classical Roman villa that had been buried for centuries under the ash of Mt. Vesuvius. Today, most of the collection has been moved to the newer Getty Center, but (fittingly) the classical antiquities have stayed put.
