Description:

While surfing may have originated in the Polynesian culture, no region has embodied the spirit of the sport like Southern California. The statue pays homage to the city in which the sport (and lifeguards) got its start in SoCal. Featuring a bronze, well-muscled young man propping up a vertically aligned surfboard, the statue stands 18 feet high. Other elements of the sculpture include children riding giant fish while building sandcastles around the surfer, who stands on a steampunk-style platform. It was completed by James A. Wasil in 2008.
