A more comical rendition of the venerated Spanish Franciscan priest was created in 1976 by Louis DuBois. A large, misshapen, disproportionate finger seems to be pointing straight to the Pacific Ocean, but is actually revealing the direction of where he died - the San Carlos Mission. The malformed stucco statue is here to stay even though many locals apparently dislike it - which is perhaps a metaphor for the controversial figure who is seen as both saint and subjugator.
