Description:
According to the Arts Council for Long Beach website, Michael Petow's inspiration for his beautifully odd and unbalanced work is his own subconscious. Dealing with mental illness such as schizophrenia gave him a source of creativity to tap into. The mural is on the side of the Kalaveras restaurant, the name being a take on the Spanish word for "calavera" which is a representation of a human skull - often seen in the decorations for Día de los Muertos. A few hundred feet away from the beach, this mural is a convenient stop on a weekend or day off from work - add in a spicy cucumber margarita from Kalaveras.
