Description:

The Kate Sessions Statue in Balboa Park is a bronze sculpture of Kate Sessions, a prominent horticulturalist who made significant contributions to the park's flora. The statue is located near the west entrance of the park and depicts Sessions holding a plant specimen. Sessions was known as the "Mother of Balboa Park" for her role in introducing many of the plant species that now flourish in the park. She was responsible for the landscaping of several areas in the park, including the Botanical Building, the Lily Pond, and Palm Canyon. The statue was created by artist Anna Hyatt Huntington and was unveiled in 1939, six years after Sessions' death.
