Lick Observatory

This active research facility was established in 1888 and is maintained by the University of California system and located in an isolated area east of San Jose. The drive up the mountains to the observatory is quite enjoyable, too. A couple fun facts: Lick Observatory was the first mountaintop observatory built in the U.S. and the first one in the world to be permanently occupied.
