Description:
This historic site's claim to fame is as an early 1900s socialist and separatist colony. Yep, founded in 1914 by a plucky failed mayoral candidate, Job Harriman, Llano del Rio was a fairly self-sustaining enclave during its lifetime. And it was "whites only" cuz they weren't racist, they just thought mixing races wouldn't be expedient per their periodical, "The Western Comrade." Ahem. The community had some wins but suffered from the seemingly typical infighting you get whenever humans create a new society together. At its heyday in 1917, 1,110 residents called Llano home. In Nov. 1917, the colony moved to New Llano, Louisiana. Now all the remains are dusty ruins worth a pit stop on Hwy 138.
