Description:
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Compton, California, is a late-modernist public sculpture installed in 1978 at the city’s Civic Center Plaza as a tribute to the civil rights leader’s legacy. Designed by artist Gerald Gladstone in collaboration with Civic Center architect Harold L. Williams, the memorial was originally conceived as a fountain but evolved into a series of rising white panels surrounding a reflecting pool, symbolically evoking King’s final “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” message. It stands at the heart of Compton’s government complex, honoring Dr. King’s ideals of justice and unity within the community.
