It also goes by the names Australian Banyan and Ficus macrophylla, but this particular one was brought here as a seed by a sailor. Thriving in this Mediterranean climate, the fig tree is believed to be the largest F. macrophylla in the United States. More than 140 years old, the Moreton Bay Fig has a span of over 170 feet and can provide shade for 16,000 people under its 21,000 square foot canopy.
