Nike Missile Site LA-55
Almost immediately after World War II the U.S. was embroiled in an intense covert struggle with the former USSR. Thus termed the Cold War, there are still remnants of the hostilities in the recent past. L.A., with its port and wide-open access to the Pacific Ocean, would have been a prime target for an enemy nation. This missile is one of 16 placed in strategic locations around Southern California that would have defended L.A. in the event of an attack. It has weathered the decades pretty well and some of the surrounding buildings are still in use. The missile itself was deactivated in 1974.
