Patton State Hospital Museum

The second oldest psychiatric hospital in California has the largest number of patients being treated - approximately 1,500. Opened in 1893 this hospital has seen psychiatric treatment from its early, not-so-enlightened days to the present era. The museum showcases its history not neglecting its more sordid moments such as the sterilization of almost 4,500 people. Due to limited staff the museum can only be visited by appointment; you'll have to make plans well in advance. Because appointments are only made through the email found on the state website you may have to wait some time before getting a confirmed date.
