San Fernando Mission

The 118, 405, and 5 freeways surround this mission established in 1797 and named for King Ferdinand III of Spain and founded by Father Fermin Lasuen. As with most of the California missions San Fernando Mission was self-sufficient with a thriving farm and livestock. The structures, arranged around a quadrangle, include a small adobe church, the padre's quarters and a guesthouse, and a stunning colonnade of 19 arches. Church services are offered every day or simply come for a self-guided tour around the large complex. (Submitted by Christine Peeples)
