Description:

San Pedro's three-eyed fish mural—painted in 1991 by local artist Dave Butkus—is a beloved piece of street art that originated as a spontaneous response to the harbor's heavy pollution at the time. Located at 38th and Gaffey, the mural humorously imagines what kind of creature might survive in such toxic waters. Though originally anonymous and expected to be short-lived, the fish quickly became a local icon, repeatedly restored by the community and embraced as a symbol of both environmental awareness and San Pedro’s quirky character. It has since appeared on local merchandise and remains a grassroots landmark. While often compared to "Blinky," the three-eyed fish from The Simpsons, Butkus created the mural independently and without influence from the show.
