Description:

This is the parcel of land that set off the California Gold Rush. In 1858 James Marshall found gold flakes while building a sawmill. What happened afterwards is history. Amazingly, there is still plenty of gold to be found - people today make an income prospecting! Anyone can stake a claim although it's not as simple as it sounds. If you're not in the market to stake a claim, you can still visit the museum or take lessons in gold-panning. (Submitted by Faith Coyne)
