Legendary surf hero and lifeguard, Tim Kelly, is memorialized in bronze at Hermosa Beach Pier. His life was tragically cut short at the tender age of 24 in a 1964 car crash. He had been a part of the South Bay's Junior Lifguard Program before his untimely death. The original statue was built in 1970 and was made of fiberglass and foam, but was recast in bronze after a series of upgrades.
