Why is the world’s largest Dutch windmill in America and not in Holland? Because America, that’s why. Murphy Windmill was built in 1908 to pump water for use in the newly-established Golden Gate Park. On a windy day, this big boy could pump a whopping 40,000 gallons of aqua per hour. Even so, it eventually became less impressive when electrical power proved more efficient.
