Description:

The Denver Zoo was founded in 1896 and is an 80-acre facility located in City Park of Denver, Colorado. The zoo's first donation was an orphaned American black bear and its animal collection has now swelled to 4,125 specimens which represent 613 different species. With its construction of Bear Mountain, the zoo became the first zoo in America to use naturalistic enclosures rather than barred cages. The Denver Zoo was named the "Greenest Zoo in the Country" at the World Renewable Energy Forum in 2012.
