Description:
Fort Stevens, located in Washington, D.C., is a historic Civil War fort built in 1861 as part of the city's defensive ring. It gained prominence during the Battle of Fort Stevens in July 1864, when Confederate forces under General Jubal Early attempted to capture the capital. President Abraham Lincoln himself visited the fort during the battle, making it the only time a sitting U.S. president came under direct fire. Today, Fort Stevens is preserved as a historical site within the National Park Service, with interpretive signs and monuments honoring its role in protecting Washington, D.C., during the Civil War.
