Established in 1974 and containing the works endowed by philanthropist Joseph Hirshhorn this museum was designed by Gordon Bunshaft and is maintained by the Smithsonian Institute. As part of the Smithsonian admission is always free. The museum and sculpture gardens are dedicated to exhibiting the best of the modern art world with special emphasis placed on the works created post-WWII.
