Description:
Established in 1856, Old Ebbitt Grill stands as Washington, D.C.'s oldest saloon, originally a boarding house owned by William E. Ebbitt, likely located near today’s Chinatown. It quickly became a gathering place for prominent figures, hosting notable guests like President McKinley and visits from U.S. presidents including Grant, Johnson, Cleveland, Roosevelt, and Harding. Renowned as the city's first saloon, Old Ebbitt relocated several times, eventually settling in the National Press Building in the early 20th century. Until the 1920s, it featured both Dutch and Old English-themed saloons before moving to 1427 F Street NW, where these themes combined to create the iconic Old Ebbitt Grill known today.
