One of the most recognizable buildings in America, the U.S. Capitol is the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government. This neoclassical building was completed in 1800, shortly after the U.S. gained its independence from Britain. However, it was attacked and partially burned by the British in the War of 1812. The building as we know it today wasn't completed until the 1960s as the size and scope of the federal government grew to mammoth proportions. Book your tours in advance, the spots fill up fast.
