Description:

Fort Mose was established in 1738 just north of St. Augustine as Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, becoming the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what is now the United States. Founded by the Spanish, it offered freedom to formerly enslaved Africans who escaped British colonies and agreed to convert to Catholicism and serve in the militia. Fort Mose played a key defensive role in protecting St. Augustine before being destroyed and rebuilt, and today it is preserved as Fort Mose Historic State Park.
