Fred the Tree

According to ecologists, the Australian pine is not native to the area and it is suspected that Fred was "planted" by a seed from bird droppings. Even though it is unclear how the name originated, residents have been referring to the tree as Fred and the name has become as firmly established as the tree itself. When US 1 finally reopened after Hurricane Irma in 2017, locals were pleasantly surprised to see that Fred was still standing. Despite facing one of the most severe natural disasters in decades, Fred managed to survive. Fred has become a bit of a celebrity for being the little tree that withstood the hurricane, transforming from a local favorite into a genuine landmark.
