This historic site, the Sugarloaf Key Bat Tower in Monroe County, is also known as the Perky Bat Tower and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It was built in 1929 by a fish lodge owner in order to keep the mosquito population down in the Florida keys. The bats were placed into the tower but flew away never to return - what a batastrophe!
