Description:
The Allatoona Pass Battlefield preserves the site of one of the fiercest engagements of the American Civil War, fought on October 5, 1864, when Confederate forces under General Samuel French attacked Union troops defending a vital railroad supply line for General William T. Sherman's army. Despite being heavily outnumbered and suffering severe casualties, the Union garrison held its fortified position, helping secure Sherman's supply route and contributing to the eventual Union victory in the Atlanta Campaign. Today, visitors can explore remarkably well-preserved earthworks, trenches, and the historic railroad cut, which was also part of the famous Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.
