This National Historic Landmark is the oldest fort in Georgia. Built in 1808, the fort's construction was authorized by President Thomas Jefferson in the event of possible war with Great Britain or France. It's location was perfect for guarding Savannah from an attack by sea. This historical fort is the site of two wars - the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The best time to visit is in the summer when visitors can observe daily cannon demonstrations.
