This bustling seaside village was, for centuries, a stomping ground for Hawaiian royalty. Kamehameha the Great declared Kailua-Kona the Kingdom of Hawaii’s first capital, and it remained a retreat for royals until the late 1900s when it was transformed into a popular tourist destination. Today it’s not only home to lots of historical landmarks, but it’s alive with restaurants, quaint shops, and happenin’ night clubs. There’s truly something for everyone at this historical hotspot. What’s more, the Kailua pier is also famous for being the starting/finishing point for the internationally-renowned Ironman World Championship.
