Kohala Historical Sites State Monument

The Kohala Historical Sites State Monument is located in North Kohala and it's the home to two important historical sites - Mo'okini Heiau and Kamehameha the Great's birthplace. Mo'okini is one of the most famous luakini heiau or sacrificial temples on the island and it's a National Historic Landmark. The original temple site is around 1,500 years old and measures 250 feet x 130 feet with an open stone-paved court enclosed by 20 feet high stone walls. This is also a memorial to Kamehameha the Great, one of Hawaii's greatest kings who united all the island chiefdoms into one kingdom. A single dirt road from Upolu Airport is the only path you can follow that will lead you to the Kohala Historical Sites State Monument. The road is located about 1.5 miles off the Akoni Pule Highway. Turn North on Upolu Point road near the town of Hawi and West at the tiny airstrip. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially in poor weather conditions.
