Kula Kai Caverns can be found on the south side of the Big Island in Ocean View. The cave system on the Big Island in Hawaii marks 1,000-year-old lava tubes that you can explore with experienced spelunkers. You will learn about the lava, the science of the caves and lava tube formation, and how the Hawaiians utilized them. These are also the youngest caves on earth and attract scientists from all over the world!
Kula Kai runs various tours from an intro geology tour to a commanding crawl and spelunking adventure where you'll don all the gear (helmets, headlamps, and kneepads) and venture deep into the vast lava tube system. If you have claustrophobia, you'd best choose one of easier, lighted trail tours. Tours must be reserved in advance and the caverns themselves are not wheelchair accessible.
